“The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.”
― Franklin D. Roosevelt
Poverty comes with its privileges. Comparing to the time period of Franklin D Roosevelt to the office now, our level of poverty has grown to be progressive. For example our Social Security Administration, FDIC bank insurance , and even Federal Housing Administration is still around to this day. Which was a main part of “The new deal”. The new deal had been founded by FDR. In 1932, FDR started his promising campaign ' The New Deal' for the American people. The new deal was a promise to clean up things from the great depression.
The great depression was the cause for the new deal. The great depression had started with the crash of all the stocks markets that had left millions of people unemployed. Leaving them with few choices, such as selling apples on the corner to make a living. Many children had to drop out of schools and help their households. People couldn’t pay their debt so they were forced to sell their homes and cars. The rich were actually more effected than the poor because the poor didn’t have much to do with the stock market.
“More than 750,000 New Yorkers are reported to be dependent upon city relief, with an additional 160,000 on a waiting list. Expenditures average about $8.20 per month for each person on relief.”
FDR is well known for economic development and progressivism. The new deal has brought many good benefits to the American people. The economic collapsed in the late 1920’s and lasted for 4 years till 1933. The new deal was put in action in 1933. During this time the 3 R’s were put in place. Relief, Recovery, and Reform. This is a big benefit for the unemployed and poor. Recovering the economy levels and helping the financial system was the new deal, an act from the democrats. Which left the republicans split and angry, giving them reason to think the economy will go further down hill than it already was.
When comparing the late 1920’s to current times, “poor people” the conclusion is be that they would considered different things. Being poor today entitles you to qualify for government assistance. The government has many programs such as food stamps, housing, social security, free lunch in schools, and fee waiver for required school activities. During the great depression each person would receive $8.20 as government support. $1 in the 1930’s is equal to $13.35 in 2013. An annual inflation of 3.17%. If someone could travel in time from the great depression to now, they would, without a doubt, say that being poor in 2013 is considered a luxury. Many organization are designed for many different categories Women and children, men, children, and teenagers. Many of these were founded on the new deal.
Nevertheless there are still people and families that are struggling that can not receive government assistance. What some call poor people fighting poverty. “America has more empty houses than homeless people,” says Cheri Honkala, the executive director of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union (KWRU). The Kensington Welfare Rights Union teaches people how end poverty. Providing a home, but allowing them to fend for themselves for home repairs and any other necessities.
As a country, we have learned each other struggles. Walking into to the steps for everyone to be successful. Providing the bare minimal for everyone to survive. During the great depression everyone struggles together, becoming a community taking care of one another. Nowadays being poor could mean isolating yourself to fight poverty or just sit in it wishing for someone to give you luck.
“There are two types of poor people, those who are poor together and those who are poor alone. The first are the true poor, the others are rich people out of luck”
- Jean-Paul Sartre
